Welcome
to the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Founded in 1927 as the first academic program in anesthesiology
in the country under the guidance of Dr. Ralph M. Waters, our department
has a proud tradition. Nearly 80 years later we remain committed
to Dr. Waters' guiding principles of providing outstanding patient
care, educating the next generation of clinicians and leaders, and
advancing the scientific foundation of our discipline.
We are fortunate to be part of a world-class university, a thriving
medical center, and a wonderful community. The University of Wisconsin-Madison
is recognized as one of the premier institutions in the country,
both for its educational programs and for its cutting-edge research.
The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics is frequently cited
in publications listing the nation's best health care providers.
And Madison, the state capitol, provides a high quality of life,
with excellent schools, a wide variety of arts and entertainment,
and ready access to nature and recreation.
I encourage you to learn about the different facets of our department
by exploring this website. You will learn about our strong commitment
to resident and continuing medical education, with a level-specific
core curriculum, a visiting professor program that brings in nationally
recognized experts on a monthly basis, a weekly case conference
series, and opportunities to participate in a range of specialized
clinical programs as well as research. You will learn about our
state-of-the-art Human Simulation Center, and about opportunities
for medical student rotations and fellowship training. And, you
will learn about the broad range of clinical, educational, and research
activities in which we engage.
As a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin for more than
16 years I have come to appreciate the unique blend of professional
and personal opportunities that our department and city offers.
I look forward to contributing to our continuing success, and I
invite you to become a part of it.
