Ambulatory
Anesthesia Fellowship
Educational Mission: To provide advanced training
and didactic sessions which enable fellows to acquire a wide range
of clinical knowledge, skills, and judgment as well as administrative
acumen. This fellowship offers the education necessary to both provide
perioperative anesthetic care and to support the efficient management
of an outpatient surgical center or office based practice.

Ambulatory Anesthesia Faculty:
Many members of the UW Department of Anesthesiology provide outpatient
care at a number of different facilities, offering fellows exposure
to a broad range of faculty styles and practice settings.
Administrative Medicine Faculty:

The ambulatory anesthesia section of the UW
Department of Anesthesiology provides anesthetics for more than
9,000 adult and pediatric operative and procedural cases annually.
Cases cover the gamut of subspecialties including orthopedics, podiatry,
otolaryngology, ophthalmology, interventional radiology, general
surgery, plastic and aesthetic surgery, dental and maxillofacial
surgery, urology, dermatology, and others. Many of these anesthetics
are provided at the UW Hospital Outpatient Surgery Center, separate
from the inpatient operating rooms. The fellow will also have the
opportunity to provide clinical care at a freestanding Outpatient
center and one or more office procedure sites.
The University of Wisconsin Department of Anesthesiology
offers a flexible educational experience in both the clinical and
administrative aspects of Ambulatory Anesthesia. One and two year
positions are available.
Clinical Fellowship Curriculum
- Clinical rotations in the operating rooms
of the UW Hospital Outpatient Surgery Center.
- Elective rotations at a freestanding
outpatient surgery center in Madison, WI.
- Assignments to various office procedure
sites.
- A one month period of elective reading.
- Completion of a clinical research project.
Fellows will be expected to initiate at least one clinical research
project over the course of the year, under the guidance of Dr.
Springman or another anesthesiologist. The Society for Ambulatory
Anesthesia (SAMBA) national meeting offers the opportunity to
present preliminary abstract data and to network with others in
the world of ambulatory anesthesia.
Administrative Medicine Curriculum
This element of the one or two year fellowship experience
offers an opportunity to obtain the necessary administrative and
business education in preparation for a career managing most aspects
of ambulatory or office-based surgery organizations. The fellowship
can be tailored to meet the needs of the applicant, allowing one
or two years of business courses through the nationally renowned
University of Wisconsin School of Business. Courses in fiscal management,
leadership, and entrepreneurship will enable anesthesiologists to
evaluate and direct the management of any clinical practice.Other
opportunities include attending workshops sponsored by the Association
of Anesthesia Clinical Directors or the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
