The
University Of Wisconsin - Madison
A central element of life in Madison is the
University of Wisconsin, where more than 40,000 students choose
from over 4,000 courses in 130 departments. Set on a beautiful lakeside
campus, the University is a multidisciplinary institution with graduate
and postdoctoral courses of study in the schools of Law, Journalism,
Business, Engineering, Education, Art, Letters and Sciences, Veterinary
Medicine, Agriculture and Life Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, and
Nursing. State-of-the art computer facilities, world-class laboratories,
and extensive libraries foster an atmosphere conducive to the energetic
pursuit of knowledge.
Distinguished UW faculty, among the most published
in the world, are at the center of this pursuit of academic excellence.
Three have been awarded Nobel prizes, and seven have won the National
Medal of Science. The UW is one of the top institutions in the nation
in research funding, with the universityıs long history of accomplishments
including the identification of Vitamin D, advances in bone marrow
transplantation, the development of the anticoagulant coumadin,
birth control pills, a synthetic gene and the UW solution for organ
preservation.
Cultural and leisure opportunities abound at
the UW. The Memorial Union, located on the lakefront, hosts world-renowned
performers in the arts, an endless variety of films, art exhibits,
and the ever-popular "mini-courses" ranging from wine tasting to
computer literacy. Campus concert halls and theaters play host to
opera, dance, symphony and stage performances year round. The Hoofers,
a Union based student organization, offers teaching and experience
in outdoor activities ranging from sailing to downhill skiing.
The picturesque campus is enhanced by a 1,300
acre Arboretum filled with native Wisconsin prairie and woodland
plant species. Biking, jogging, and cross-country ski trails make
the Arboretum a year round destination for locals seeking retreat
in the great outdoors. On-campus recreation facilities offer basketball,
swimming, ice hockey, tennis, weight lifting, and racquetball. Spectator
sports, ever-popular at this Big Ten university, include Badger
football, basketball, hockey, tennis, soccer, and track.
