For
over seventy-five years the goal of the University of Wisconsin
Department of Anesthesiology has been to provide residents with
an environment that promotes the acquisition of knowledge, develops
the judgment and skills necessary to practice as a consultant in
the field of Anesthesiology, and encourages basic and clinical investigation.
The field has expanded greatly over the years and now stretches
beyond the operating room into the emergency room, critical care
unit, and pain management center. Accordingly, the skills of the
anesthesiologist must now go beyond preoperative assessment and
intraoperative management. The successful anesthesiologist in the
twenty first century will need to be a respected, well-rounded physician
with an intimate knowledge of the entire spectrum of perioperative
medicine.
The Department of Anesthesiology at the University
of Wisconsin-Madison provides an outstanding academic environment
to train such physicians. The Department is based primarily within
the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, a tertiary care
referral center providing state-of-the-art medical care to patients
from throughout the area. The medical center, in turn, is part of
a large, intellectually vibrant university community.
The true strength and measure of any organization
is its people. The Department of Anesthesiology enjoys first-rate
faculty committed to clinical service, education, and investigation.
Now numbering over 40 members, the faculty provides depth and expertise
in all areas of modern anesthesiology and perioperative care. Because
of the Department's moderate size, however, the atmosphere is informal
and conducive to learning. The UW program in anesthesiology enjoys
a long history of outstanding residents who have gone on to successful
and satisfying careers in private practice and academic settings
across the country. Resident groups at the UW become closely knit
and develop a camaraderie that lasts a lifetime.
As a UW Anesthesiology resident you will get
to know each faculty member personally, and they will get to know
you. The result is day-to-day training that is both individualized
and challenging early and throughout the residency. As colleagues,
faculty and residents provide progressive care to a challenging
patient population in the framework of a supportive environment
that facilitates academic growth and development. The result is
an outstanding learning experience that is difficult to achieve
at a larger institution.
